Running Gear - An Introduction

First off - the running gear (ie suspension, brakes, central hydraulics, driveshafts etc etc) on the S2 Coupe is almost identical to that on the 20V Coupe Quattro with some notable differences that will be pointed out in the relevant sections of this chapter.

The S2 Avant and Saloon have the same suspension configuration as each other, but the rear of the S2 Coupe is rather different to that of the Avant and Saloon.

In brief - the rear suspension configuration of the S2 Coupe is essentially a mirror image of the front with the same layout of McPherson struts, a hefty subframe and lower wishbones that was used on the UR quattro. The rear of Avant and Saloon models utilises a different strut with an upper tranverse link and a rather different layout on the lower wishbones. Furthermore, the S2 Coupe uses a smaller rear differential than that on the S2 Avant and Saloon.

Annoyingly - the Erwin documentation available from Audi covers the running gear of S2 Saloon and Avant much more completely than the S2 Coupe, so there are a few official bits of info on the rear of an S2 Coupe to gleam in the future.
